
- Altab Ali was born in Bangladesh in 1953.
- As a young man he travelled to Britain to work – temporarily as a Textile worker around Brick Lane.
- Ali – when returning from work one night in 1978 – was tragically murdered by racists who were part of a group called the ‘National Front’.
- In response thousands of Bangladeshi in Britain at the time (and many of their supporters) began big protests against racism.
- In 1998 Tower Hamlets Council renamed a park at the end of Brick Lane – next to where Ali died – was renamed Altab Ali park.
